How can I reduce traffic noise coming in through my air conditioner?

I have a window-unit ac with accordion side panels made out of plastic. I hear all kinds of street noise coming in through this plastic. It's like I have no windows. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Is there any material I can use to cover the plastic or anything I can do to reduce the sound without removing my ac?
