How to unlock characters on Mario Party 8 for the Wii?

We have been playing Mario Party 8 on the Wii for a long time now and have still be unable to unlock one of the characters. We played the Star Battle and unlocked Hammer Bro but, there is still one character (as my hubby calls him...the "squid looking guy") that is locked. We thought we could buy him in the Fun Bazaar but were unable to. Any info you can give us on how to unlock him would be helpful. Thanks!
